When would I use this?

When a website breaks, the error usually comes with a number — 404, 500, 503. Each number is a standard message from the website's computer saying what went wrong (or, for some numbers, what went right).

If a number like that turns up in an error page, an email from IT, or your own site's reports, look it up here to see what it means in plain terms and when it's normally used. Search by number, name, or keyword, or filter by category.
